Introduction
to the Secondary School programme
As budgets for the award of points are too small
for any meaningful reward (i.e. gift) to be acquirable, free
of charge, within a reasonable timescale, the programme offers
discounts and/or privileges against a range of products suitable
for the school market.
There are four steps to the operation of the programme:-
- Each pupil/teacher is given a Smartcard. The
Smartcard is charged with credits at
any canteen till or terminal by cash or cheque payment. We have
also developed a
mechanism for charging cards via the internet site which operates
the reward programme.
- Each time the pupil purchases a meal using
the Smartcard, they earn points which are credited to a designated
‘purse’ on the card.
- When 250 points have been collected, they are
exchangeable for a discount voucher. The pupil/teacher logs
on to the branded website using a PIN and uploads the points
into an on-line bank account by entering the voucher code number.
- The website provides details of discounted
goods available against points, which
can be ordered on-line. Credit regulations ensure that pupils
under 18 years require the consent of parents
An alternative system has been developed
for schools, which do not use Smartcards.
The site incorporates other features including:
Information about health, lifestyle and the environment
Links to other sites about education, leisure, local information
etc
School bulletins and menus
On-line facility to pay for meals
The programme has been well received by students,
teachers and parents and indeed many have written in complementary
terms about the healthy focus, great savings and design of the
site. At the same time, indications are that the programme has
contributed to increases in school meal uptake by both value
and volume.
The key to the success of the programme is that
it is simple to operate, whilst merchandise prices are genuinely
well below retail and in many cases offer spectacular savings
eg CDs, clothing and educational products. |

The primary school programme operates
somewhat differently in that parents receive points when they
buy products on the site, redeemable against future purchases,
with the additional benefit that schools receive a commission
on all purchases. Schools can then use the commission to purchase
educational and sports goods.
The primary school site also includes
many additional features including:
Links to information about child
healthcare
Educational support
School bulletins
A reward programme which parents can set up for their child
A swap shop for buying/selling outgrown toys, games etc.

school programmes add value to client’s brands, present
them as innovative catering providers, provides an opportunity
for efficient communication and benefits the communities they
serve. |

There are 3 cost elements associated with the
RewardEd programme: development, promotion and maintenance.
The development cost has been borne by LACA and
this provides a template for individual local authority caterers.
A maintenance costs will be charged to each local
authority caterer, signing up to the programme. As the number
of participating local authority caterers increases, the maintenance
cost will reduce on the following scale.
1-5 authorities - £500 per month per authority
6 – 10 authorities - £450 per month per authority
11 – 20 authorities - £400 per month per authority
21 plus authorities - £350 per month per authority
There is no cost associated with the award
of points. If vouchers are required however these can be
produced by the local authority caterer or availalable from
Howard Associates and supplied at the nominal cost of printing.
Local Authority Caterers who enter into a 5 year
agreement will receive a 10% discount. This would not commit
them to running a programme for that term but would commit them
to using Howard associates whilst a scheme was in operation.
Any local authority caterer who only wants one
site. ie secondary or primary, will receive a 10% discount.
Promotions will be communicated at no cost via
the site; however promotional literature and prizes will be
introduced ad-hoc on a project basis. Quotations will be provided
on each project.
Maintenance will include updates on products,
menus, recruitment, links etc. and reasonable changes to site
content. |

As an alternative to the generic brands we have
developed (Points4U and FeedM), the programme can incorporate
your existing brands.
We are also happy to quote on developing specific
brands for you.
